  • Do we need to book in advance?

    We recommend that you ring in advance to avoid being disappointed
    Weather and River conditions dictate viability of any trip

  • Where are you based?

    Monmouth NP25 3DP- 5 mins walk from Town Centre

    What If I am late and miss my allotted time?
    Unfortunately if you miss your scheduled time and the allotted minibus and we have to send out an extra minibus to
    catch up then you will be charged an extra fee depending on size of group

  • Is there public transport close to your base?

    Yes bus service but no train station close by

  • Do we pay extra for transportation?

    Yes transportation is included in the canoe hire for day/half day - Longer trips/overnight is + transportation
    please enquire of Centre for these trips.

  • Is there car parking at your Centre?

    There is still free parking outside of our Centre gates

  • How do we get back to the start point?

    You paddle back usually to where your car is unless you have arranged for a pickup

  • Is there a Min or Max size limit

    Yes 2 persons min.
    If concerned about the size of your group please contact the Centre

  • Do you have Insurance?

    Public Liability Policy £5m

  • Can I camp at the Centre?

    Please ring the Centre for a list of campsites

  • Are there places to stop for food?

    You can picnic or BBQ on the riverbank but please be mindful of land owners and respect your surroundings leaving the area as you found it
    or stop at a riverside establishment depending on the trip chosen

  • When are you open?

    Office hours 9am-5pm all year round

  • Can I hire on my own?

    No there must be a min. of 2 people on the river

  • Can I hire a boat with my children?

    Depending on the trip, experience and age of children, see trip and boat information. Always ask for Centre Advice
    as we can raft two canoes together

  • Can we take our dog?

    If it will fit, you trust it to behave (wildlife on river) and you don't tie it in.

  • What is the youngest age?

    3 years, as long as they fit the buoyancy aids, trips downriver of Monmouth. Ask Centre Advice. Rafted canoes are recommended for young children.

  • I am pregnant, have an injury or condition, can I canoe?

    We suggest you contact us for advice

  • What do we wear and bring?

    Wear light synthetic or thermal clothes if possible that will dry quickly and are still warm when wet, not cotton or denim. Sports sandals or old trainers with good grip, the river banks are often steep, rocky and slippery.
    Bring a fleece, waterproofs, sun protection, water, snacks, medication, cash for pub with you, we don’t recommend you take electricals or valuables but a mobile phone should be taken. Small barrels given.
    Leave a change of clothes and towel in the car for after, just in case!

  • What extras do we take on overnight trips?

    Tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, torch, cooker, pans, cutlery, cup, food, water, wash bag, first aid kit, change of clothes, warm jumper. See what to bring and wear on website www.monmouthcanoe.co.uk

  • What is the difference between a canoe and a kayak?

    Please see boat types.

  • Do canoes capsize?

    Sometimes they do, always be prepared, they are stable but people get caught out, take a spare top and leave a change of clothes in the car.

  • What if the weather is bad?

    If the river is very high and dangerous we will cancel, we will rearrange or refund your booking and give you as much notice as possible. If it is just raining please bring waterproofs, you can hire them if you don’t have them. Very strong winds could also cause us to cancel.

  • How far can we canoe in a day?

    10-15 miles is comfortable, 15-20 is challenging, you can average at speed of 3.5 miles per hour over a long day with breaks. A head-wind could make this much more difficult so it sensible to not set your goals to high just in case.

  • Can we fish from the boats?

    No, we don’t allow fishing from the boats, at campsites you must have an EA rod licence and permission from the riparian rights owner.

  • We are under 18 can we go?

    Between 17- 18 you may go with a letter of parental consent. Under 17 yrs must be accompanied by adults.

  • Do you have changing rooms/toilets?

    Yes, but no showers, the Leisure Centre opposite can provide showers for a small charge opposite us.

  • Do we get storage in the boat?

    Yes, we provide dry barrels with the canoes and dry bags with the kayaks. We do not guarantee these, so don’t take electricals unless you have your own suitable watertight container. Mobile phone is now recommended.

  • How deep is the river?

    It varies in depth over the whole of the river

  • Do we get a map/briefing?

    Yes, we provide everybody with a map and a flat screen presentation before you leave the centre, we use a display to show you certain areas of importance like the rapids.

  • What happens at the finish?

    We explain everything in the briefing at the beginning so you are not left wondering. The finish is just around the corner from the canoe centre, so you walk around and check in at the office with your equipment.

  • What if we need to alter your trip?

    If for reasons beyond our control we have to alter your trip to a similar alternative you will be given the new option, if you partake in the new option you will not be entitled to a refund.

    What If I lose or damage equipment?
    The Centre will charge a nominal fee depending on damage or loss
