Canoeing & Kayaking Courses For All Abilities & Ages

We provide canoeing and kayaking courses to teach you to learn a new skill, we offer beginner to advance level courses all taught to BCU level Standards.  Some of selected courses include BCU awards building on your skill level and experience on the river.

Course are run on set dates throughout the year, Courses are generally  run in numbers of 4 persons and above. Please see course dates  and contact us for fully availability. 

Although we make every effort to run a course it is not always viable for us to run it with just 1 person  if this is the case then we would notify you in advance and a full refund will be given. 4 persons min. or ask for an individual price.

INTRODUCTION TO WW CANOEING

Suitable for people who have done a decent amount of open canoe paddling on the flat water and have had some formal training on the core strokes, turns and directions of movement. This 1 day course introduces the techniques you require to manoeuvre around easy rapids such as breaking in and out and ferry gliding, basic hydrology will be included giving you an understanding of how rapids work and how to use them and descend them well. The course is based around Symonds Yat rapids and often finishes with a paddle a few miles further though to Monmouth.

INTRODUCTION TO CANOEING BCU 1* AWARD

The introduction to canoeing is open to anyone, ideal if you haven’t done any skills training or are a complete beginner. You will learn about the equipment, the river, basic paddling techniques whilst paddling both solo and tandem, bow and stern. The day is designed to be a fun and enjoyable insight into open canoeing by learning some skills and then putting them into practice during a beautiful river trip down the River Wye stopping for a riverside picnic on route.

FOUNDATION IN CANOEING

This course gives you a solid base in canoe skills across the board, solo and tandem including flat and moving water and a taste of traditional river ascent techniques. It gives you a great platform to develop on and great for anyone wishing to take up the sport. The course is delivered over three different sections of the river including the tidal Wye so you gain the most experience possible.

YOUNG KAYAKERS

The Young Kayakers runs one day per week through the summer holidays. A combination of River trips, skills & games provide an exiting and fun course that inspires and grows confidence in Young Kayakers. Participants may join as many sessions as they like and may join in at any time. Bring a packed lunch. Suitable for all kids in the school holidays, it is a fun day activity where skills are learnt by practising them, then using them in games and activities. The session sometimes takes in a short river trip with some mini rapids to navigate and some small tributaries to paddle up and explore. The group will learn to paddle in all directions and will be encouraged to practice a safe capsize. They will learn about the river environment, river access, what the hazards are, a bit about the wildlife, river etiquette and other river users.  They are very likely to get wet through water fights and having fun so a full change of clothes, shoes, towel, packed lunch and any inhalers etc must be brought along. A certificate will also be achievable.

INTRODUCTION TO WW KAYAKING

This day white water intro course focuses on learning the skills needed to move your kayak around on moving water, the first couple of hours of the course are spent doing preparatory skills on slow or still water, as the day progresses you will move into gradually faster, stronger, more exciting water learning skills including breaking in and out, ferry gliding, hydrology theory and how to decide your way through a simple rapid.  The course is normally run at Symonds Yat rapids but on occasions may be at other locations, it will always meet in the morning at 9am at Monmouth Canoe Centre unless informed otherwise.

INTRODUCTION TO KAYAKING

This 1 day course is ideal for anyone interesting in getting a taste of kayaking, learning the basics and having some fun, the day entails getting to know your kit, some knowledge about the river environment, basic paddling skills and then a river trip during which to practice your skills, have some fun and take on some easy rapids. At the end of the day participants are encouraged to get wet and practice a deliberate capsize, this experience is invaluable in the event that you should do one accidentally one day. A fun and relaxed day out, bring a packed lunch.

FOUNDATION IN KAYAKING

This course gives you a solid base in kayak skills across the board, including flat and moving water, it gives you a great platform to develop on and great for anyone wishing to take up the sport. Run over 3 different river trips so you get a broad range of experience and enjoyment. You’ll learn about the boats and equipment, how to safely exit should you roll over, how to control and manoeuvre your boat in different directions and speed effectively around the river. A fun relaxed holiday.

BCU 1 STAR AWARD KAYAK

An introductory award covering the fundamental skills. Delivered over a scenic day river trip, bring a packed lunch. These dates are kayak based, if you wish to do the award mainly in open canoe please book onto the ‘Introduction to Canoeing’, you can complete the award during this course. The BCU say “A flat water canoeing or kayaking award that demonstrates an individual has basic boat control and foundation skills.

A variety of river sections & skills in canoes and kayaks covered over 2 days. An improvement award that helps paddlers develop fundamental paddlesport skills on flat water. The emphasis is on gaining a breadth of experience, creating the desired movement of the boat and developing an understanding into how the paddle, boat and water interact. Run by our expert coaches with a fun and interesting approach.
